Special Exhibition Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Okinawa’s Reversion to Japan
Period About Link
Every day from Saturday April 23 to Sunday June 19, 2022
9:15 AM to 5 PM
In 1972 Okinawa was legally returned to Japan. As such, 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of Okinawa’s reversion to Japan. Commemorating this occasion, a special exhibition will be held to depict the postwar history of Okinawa and relevant Japanese government policies towards it with the archival materials in the National Archives of Japan’s holdings.
The materials in the exhibit elucidate matters such as how Japan assisted Okinawa under the U.S. government’s postwar rule, how a legal framework for returning Okinawa to Japan was formulated, and how development policies were carried out after Okinawa’s reversion. In addition to these public records transferred from the government agencies, the exhibition includes some donated materials from former Prime Minister Eisaku Sato, who consummated Okinawa’s return. From these archival materials, one can better understand how Okinawa achieved its reversion to Japan in 1972 and what its subsequent experience was like.

On April 15, 1971, the Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was opened to notably preserve, manage, disclose, and carry out research on Japan's diplomatic records. In 2021, the Diplomatic Archives celebrated its 50th anniversary. In this exhibition, we will examine the history of the Diplomatic Archives from its establishment to today, paying particular attention to its activities, management, and systems relating to its holdings and release of documents from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We hope this exhibition will foster further interest in Japan’s foreign policy and diplomatic archives.
