Special Web Exhibition “Japan’s Army during the Meiji and Taisho Eras ―1868~1926―”
In this special exhibition, we focused on the Japanese army of the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho eras (1912-1926). We chose military-related government offices in former Manchuria as well as in Korea and Taiwan. We also coverd wartime organizations and jurisdictions. With official documents that are searchable, we hope our glossary will help you better understand the history of the Japanese army.

Japan Center for Asian Historical Records: Japanese-English Bilingual Translations Collection of Historic Terminology
Japan Center for Asian Historical Records recently released Japanese-English Bilingual Translations Collection of Historic Terminology. The collecitions was made possible by the Data Verification Committee, which is composed of outside experts who check and deliberate on the content. Our collected translations are the result of more than a decade of effort by our Data Verification Committee, which is currently chaired by SHOJI Junichiro, who also serves as Vice-President for Academic Affairs at the National Institute for Defense Studies.

On all of the category pages, the historic terminologies in English are arranged in alphabetical order. You can check Japanese translations displayed on their right. By clicking on the Japanese, you will perform a search in the JACAR database without having to input keywords.

If the number of category items in a list is too large to easily scroll through, you can narrow it down by clicking on one of the following: "0-9", "ABC", "DEF", "GHI", "JKL", "MNO", "PQRS", "TUV", or "WXYZ".

Our Japanese-English Bilingual Translations Collection data can also be downloaded as an Excel file from our website. We hope you will use it to improve the accuracy of translations. Please note that JACAR’s translation of historic terminologies does not represent official Japanese government translation. We plan to add more terminology in due course.
