On August 14, 1941, after having finished their talks aboard a warship on the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced the Atlantic Charter. This joint declaration stated the purpose of World War II and the global vision for the postwar world.

  • Document 1 is issue No. 189 of Shashin Shuho, which was published on October 8, 1941. It features an article titled “Foreign correspondence: America today” that presents photographs of the talks between Roosevelt and Churchill. An explanation of the Atlantic Charter placed next to one of the photographs reads “the U.S. and U.K. issued an eight-point joint declaration proclaiming their aim to defeat the Nazis, and posing a threat to the Axis Powers by emphasizing the West’s original world peace policies.”
