Period About Link
From January 15 (Saturday), 2022, to March 13 (Sunday), 2022 The year 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the National Archives of Japan and the 10th anniversary of the Public Records and Archives Management Act coming into force. To commemorate these events, the Archives began a series of exhibitions on public records and archives during the 2021 fiscal year. The third exhibition in this series will cover the history of public records and archives management in the modern and contemporary eras.
In the wake of the Meiji Restoration, the new government began work on sorting and preserving records. They developed systems for promulgating laws and for managing public records, and in 1907 enacted the Kōshikirei (Ordinance on the Publication of Laws and Regulations). Even as Japan experienced natural disasters and the fires of war in the years that followed, the management of public records and archives continued. Interest in preserving and releasing public records and archives heightened in the years after 1945. In 1987, the government enacted the Public Archives Law. This was followed in 1999 by the National Archives Law, and in 2009 by the Public Records and Archives Management Act. The present exhibition uses records from the National Archives to illustrate the history and development of the Cabinet’s systems for managing public records.

Hosting the Olympics in Tokyo had been a dream of the Japanese people since the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition focuses in particular on the history that led up to the holding of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
