On 4 March 1895 Japanese forces fought their way out of Haicheng, where they had been surrounded by the Qing army, and marched west to attack the city of Niuzhuang which they captured after heavy fighting. This print shows the fighting near Niuzhuang in deep snow.

  • Telegram sent on the night of 3 March by the Military Staff of the 1st Army, in charge of the attack on Niuzhuang, to the Military Staff in Japan. It reports that the 3rd and 5th Divisions of the 1st Army would launch an attack on Niuzhuang the following morning and that there are 7-8,000 Chinese troops in the vicinity of Niuzhuang.
