The Japanese army landing to occupy Rongcheng Bay

Title: [ Japan ] The Japanese army landing to occupy Rongcheng Bay: Shelfmark： 16126.d.2(81); Having captured Port Arthur in November of the previous year, on 20 January 1895 the Japanese army advanced by sea to the Shandong Peninsula to attack Weihaiwei, the base of China's Beiyang (Northern Seas) Fleet, and landed via Rongcheng Bay. In this print Japanese soldiers have transferred from the warships into boats and are heading for the shore.

Report on reconnaissance of Rongcheng Bay carried out a month before the landing on the Shandong Peninsula. The first part is a report dated 27 December 1894 from Hirayama Tōjirō, captain of the Yaeyama, to Vice Admiral Itō Sukeyuki, Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet. It records the pros and cons of a naval invasion of Rongcheng Bay and the landing of army units. The second part is another report to Vice Admiral Itō, dated 26 December 1894, sent by Lieutenant Kamaya Chūdō, staff officer of the Standing Fleet, and Lieutentant Yoshimatsu Shigetarō, staff officer of the Western Fleet. In addition to Rongcheng Bay it discusses the landing of troops at Ailun and Sanggou Bays, likewise located on the south side of Shandongjiao (a promontory on the Shandong Peninsula).

Telegram sent on 18 January 1895 by Vice Admiral Itō Sukeyuki, Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet, to Imperial General Headquarters in Japan. It notifies HQ that a convoy of army transport ships will leave for Rongcheng Bay at 1 p.m. the following day.

Telegram sent on 24 January 1895 by Imperial General Headquarters to Major-General Kodama Gentarō, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. It gives the contents of a report from the battleship Satsuma-maru which took part in the landing on the Shandong Peninsula from Rongcheng Bay. It describes how the landing by army units had been preceded by naval landing parties which were attacked by Qing forces but that after the fighting army units had landed from a succession of transport ships.
