On the 23 July 1894, with the aim of toppling the Korean government and establishing a new regime under the Daewongun, the Japanese army attacked the Gyeongbok Palace and engaged the palace garrison. In this image the Japanese Minister Plenipotentiary to Korea Ōtori Keisuke escorts the Daewongun to the Royal Palace while their guard of Japanese soldiers is involved in a shoot-out with Korean troops.

It informs him of the plan to surround the palace the following morning at the request of Ōtori Keisuke, Japan's Minister Plenipotentiary to Korea.
