Shōwa Centennial Web Exhibition Vol. 1: “Wartime Japan and Asia Through the Pages of Shashin Shūhō” released

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Shōwa era name. JACAR will hold a series of three web exhibitions focusing on the Shōwa period—a span that includes wars—to convey its multifaceted aspects. The subjects will cover the lives of the people who lived through this turbulent era both in Japan and abroad, relations with Asian nations, and postwar reconstruction.

We have now released the English version of the exhibition’s first installment. The content centers on Shashin Shūhō, a weekly photo magazine published by the Cabinet Intelligence Department (later the Cabinet Intelligence Bureau) during the Shōwa wartime years, alongside official documents and other historical materials available via the JACAR database. We hope you take the opportunity to explore the content.
