Welcome to the special exhibition on the Russo-Japanese War

This exhibition (original in Japanese) was created in 2004, marking the centenary of the Russo-Japanese War. Fought over 18 months, this war held major implications not only for Japan and Russia, but also for the whole world on an historical scale. Even to this day, there are aspects of the war which leave room for further investigation.

Shown here are relevant official documents made public by JACAR in digitized form on this website, backed up by the source materials belonging to The National Archives of Japan, Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and The National Institute for Defense Studies of the Ministry of Defense. They include the originals of such important documents as The Imperial Edict on the declaration of war against Russia dated 10 February 1904, The Imperial Edict on the ratification of the Peace Treaty between Japan and Russia (also known as the Portsmouth Peace Treaty) dated 16 October 1905, and The Imperial Edict on Peace with Russia of the same day.

The Russo-Japanese War, after 100 years, could enlighten us in many ways as a mirror shedding light on the present and the future. We would be only pleased if this exhibition could serve to familiarize visitors with historical material so that peace may prevail in the 21st century.
