- Document 1 is a document entitled “Cabinet Meeting-Approved Matters Concerning the Interpretation of the Incident,” which was issued after the start of fighting in Shanghai. This document stated that the government did not intend to view the “Shanghai Incident” (start of the fighting in Shanghai) as the occurrence of a new development. The basis for this decision was the Cabinet meeting-approved consensus that the government would regard the entire situation following the clash between Japanese and Chinese forces at the Marco Polo Bridge on July 11 of the same year as an “incident.”
- Document 2 is issue No. 77 of Shashin Shuho, which was published on August 9, 1939. It contains a special feature on the second anniversary of the Battle of Shanghai. The issue conveys the situation in Shanghai two years after hostilities began.
