Document search process

1.3 Layered Search (Series list screen)

About series layer screen (left frame)

■Layered Search
This may be useful when the organization holding the documents that you are seeking for is known.

(a)You may click on the "Layered Search" icon in the left frame to display the Layered Search screen.
It hierarchically displays a list of series.
In default, it only displays "National Archives of Japan", "The Diplomatic Record Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs", "The National Institute for Defense Studies".

(b)Please select a layer of the organization you wish to search. It expands documents along the document classification scheme of each organizations. (left frame)
Clicking any of the series (left frame) will display a list of documents contained. (displayed both in right and left frame.circled by red
Name of the selected series will be bold.

About Fonds/Series Information

It displays information of selected series. Clicking the series title will display the information of selected series.

  • Hierarchy
  • Description

■For Print page
It displays the search result in print-friendly layout.

■Detail
You can browse more detailed Fonds/Series Information.

About Fonds/Series Information

Search refinement at selected layer (circled by green)

■Search range selection
You can select the search range for refinement search. Description on how to select the search range is below.

search current results It targets the currently selected series, or the documents contained in subseries for search.
search selected target It targets the series that are checked at their Search Target field, or the documents contained in subseries for search.

■Input keyword
You can input keywords for search on documents. For information on how to input the search keyword, please refer to About keyword input.

■Synonyms & Related Words ON/OFF
It determines whether or not the search keyword should include the keyword's synonyms and related words registered in the dictionary for the search. Description on configuration is below.

Synonyms & Related Words ON It uses your keyword, its synonyms, and its related words for the search.
Synonyms & Related Words OFF It only uses the keyword you have entered for the search.

■matches per page
You can select "20", "50", "100", "200" from the pull-down menu as the number of matched records displayed per page.

About the document list contained in selected series or subseries

It displays the series you have searched.

About the document list contained in selected series or subseries

■The number of record matched
It shows the number of record matched to the search condition.

■Page No.
In case the search result has more than one page, it shows the page no. Description on how to switch the page is below.

<<First It jumps to the first page.
<Previous It jumps back to the previous page.
numbers You can jump to the page by clicking its page no.
Next> It jumps to the next page.
Last>> It jumps to the last page.

■Sort
It sorts the search result by the item selected in the pull-down menu.

Not Specified It sorts the search results by document code.
Reference Code It sorts the search results by reference code.
Date It sorts the search results by date.

■Search result list

Search Target You can narrow down the search to the documents contained in series or subseries.
You can select the target series/subseries by checking a checkbox in Search Target field.
The documents that can not be selected as target will not have a checkbox in their Search Target field.
(It is only valid when you select "search selected target")
No It indicates what number the record is in the search result.
